A celebrity convert

Recently I have been reading about Eve Lavalliere (1866-1929).  A website tells us that ‘For years, Eve Lavalliere was the toast of Parisian society, a famous beauty and the most popular actress on the French stage. “I had everything the world could offer,” she noted, “everything I could desire. Nevertheless, I regarded myself as the unhappiest of souls.” Unhappiness ran deep in her life. Her abominable childhood had ended the day her father, in a drunken rage, shot her mother and then killed himself. Her later fame and wealth could not fill the void.’  In 1917 she underwent a dramatic conversion, abandoned the stage, and withdrew to live a quiet life.  She was at this time in close contact with Carmelite Sisters and her intention was to become one of them, but she was not accepted and eventually she became a Franciscan Tertiary and devoted herself to good works and a life of penitence.  I am always fascinated to hear about celebrities who turn their back on fame and fortune, I find their stories very inspirational.

A new Manchester saint?

In our new Manchester OCDS group somebody mentioned the name of Pedro Ballester, previously unknown to me, as a potential Manchester saint.  I did some research and discovered that he was Pedro Balles
