A children's party

Last night in a Carmelite group we were discussing a letter Therese wrote to one of the missionaries she was in regular contact with, Fr Roulland.  This contains some very beautiful thoughts.  I particularly love this sentence: ‘Leaving to great souls, to great minds the beautiful books that I cannot understand, let alone put into practice, I rejoice in being little since only children and those who look like them will be admitted to the celestial banquet’.  So our greatest ambition is to be children!  And that is of course what Our Lord told us: ‘And he said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.’ (Matt. 18, 3)  I love the idea that the ‘celestial banquet’ will be like a children’s party! Also in this letter Therese writes ‘I see that it suffices to recognize one’s nothingness and to abandon oneself like a child in the arms of the Good Lord’.  So it is humility that will open to us the gates of heaven …
