Carmel and the Rosary

The Rosary Prayer rises like incense to the feet of the Almighty’

This seems a very appropriate quote from St Therese of Lisieux on today’s Feast of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary.  We Carmelites do not always cherish the rosary as we should, perhaps because we prioritise contemplative prayer over set prayers or repetitive prayers.  But Holy Mother Church encourages us to love the rosary.  It’s not a case of either/or – set prayers or contemplative prayer, they should complement each other in our spiritual lives.  The rosary reminds us too of our dual nature – physical (the beads) and spiritual (the prayer).  And one could add the psychological, because the rhythmic play of the beads can have a calming and centring effect on the mind.
