Heart speaks to heart

On this the feast day of our newest Doctor of the Church, John Henry Newman, I discover that there is a recent book which compares Newman to Edith Stein, who translated some of his writings into German. The title of the book about these two intellectual giants is itself revealing – Heart speaks to heart (by Jan Klos). One commentator writes "In this profound and stimulating study, Kłos invites the reader to think, not so much about Newman and Stein as with them, and thus join them in their unique but mutually illuminating efforts to make sense of their faith, their times (still very much our times), themselves, and, ultimately, the mystery of the truth in whose grasp they both lived and died. In translating Newman’s work, Stein discovered herself in communion with him. Heart Speaks unto Heart beautifully explores this communion, and in doing so shows us why it matters." These great minds both discovered that at the end of the day access to God goes through the heart more than through the mind. The mind has a role to play of course, but Jesus told us ‘I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life’ – the truth is a person, and how do we draw close to other persons? Through the heart.
