Sisters in the Spirit

I have been reading a book about the influence of St Teresa of Avila on St Therese of Lisieux.  We are so used to thinking of Therese as a kind of spiritual revolutionary whose ‘little way’ transformed modern Catholic spirituality that it is easy to forget how much she owed to Teresa, the Mother of her Order.  That the Order existed in her time at all was down to Teresa.  The spirit of the Order in the days of Therese - as in our days - breathed with the spirit of Teresa.  Teresa would surely have loved the ‘little way’.  Both women showed a remarkable boldness – the saint of Avila, in setting out to bring to fruition her vision of renewal in Carmel, and the saint of Lisieux, in speaking of an elevator to heaven, the short and simple way of spiritual childhood.  Both are an immense gift to the Church, a source of endless inspiration to innumerable souls.
