The marvels of technology

This morning we shall be having an OCDS National Council meeting on Zoom.  The National Council is composed of the Regional Representatives plus the National President and Fr Matt, our delegate from the Friars.  Since the pandemic we have been holding most of our meetings on Zoom, though we try to have at least one in-person gathering per year.  I marvel at the wonderful technology of Zoom.  In the old days, all our meetings had to be in person, and that involved a train trip to London, which was fair enough for folk like me based on the Midlands: I can be in London in an hour.  Members of the Council further North or to the Southwest had long and costly train journeys which had to be subsidised from our slender National funds.  We met in the Carmelite Church in Kensington and I shall always remember the little Italian restaurant in which we met for lunch before our meetings, run by a parishioner and sympathiser and I think subsidised by him.  The snag was that it usually took rather longer than suited us, in the traditional style of Mediterranean lunches.  Now with Zoom we can spend a couple of hours together gratis and without stirring from our homes.  Such can be the blessings of technological progress, though we all know about the downsides.

Carmel and Lourdes

My thoughts turn to the wonderful St Bernadette on this her feast day.  She would have loved to become a Carmelite but her poor health would have made it impossible for her to cope with the austerity
