The saint and the musical

I remember vividly being taken to the West End to see the musical Godspell, based on the Gospel of Matthew, which contains a beautiful hymn based on a prayer attributed to today’s saint - Richard of Chichester. Day by day, O Lord, these three things I pray: to see thee more clearly,to love thee more dearly, to follow thee more nearly, day by day.

At that time I was making this prayer my own and endeavouring to live it out, but little did I  know that it would eventually lead me to Carme - a land unknown to me at that time.  Now I say the same prayer, but it is transformed because I have found a way to live it out concretely in fellowship with others in Carmel. One of the delights of growing older is looking back and seeing the consistent themes in one's life that have grown increasingly meaningful and purposeful with the years.
