True Discernment

‘Discernment is the ability to see things for what they REALLY are and not for what you WANT them to be.’

I like this quotation from St Ignatius of Loyola, whose feast day is today.  I have always struggled with the question of reality, the task of distinguishing what I want to be true from what is actually true.  One of the commonest ills in our world is self-delusion, a weakness that is woefully common.  We are all prone to suffer from it, and I suppose that one of our most insistent prayers should be simply that we are able to see things as they are.  An elementary matter, you would think, but of course the Devil loves to disguise himself as an angel of light (2 Corinthians 11: 14).
