A spiritual United Nations

Fascinated by the news that a new Carmelite church was consecrated in Minsk, Belarus, in June.  The Discalced Carmelite Newsletter from Australasia that I mentioned last week has an article and pictures.  This article contains the sentence: ‘The people of Belarus built the Church of the Holy Cross to give thanks for the gift of the Eucharist’.  Such a demonstration of the Catholicity of the Church – I learn about happenings in Belarus in a newsletter sent from the Discalced Carmelite Newsletter for Australia, New Zealand, and Oceania!  I love that about Holy Mother Church!  We are truly a spiritual United Nations! I read once that there are only four countries in the world without indigenous Catholics.

As I ponder the life of today’s saint, Charles Borromeo (1538-1584), it occurs to me that his vocation paralleled that of his older contemporary St Teresa (1515-1582).  Charles set about reforming his
