A successor of Teresa

Several of the nuns that Teresa trained herself went on to be apostles in other parts of Europe.  I particularly like the story of Blessed Anne of St Bartholomew (1550-1626).  It seems she couldn’t read when she first entered the Order but apparently she learnt miraculously when she became Teresa’s assistant and indeed ended up being the saint’s secretary – Teresa would dictate letters to her.  When she died, she left behind her more than six hundred letters and various talks and devotional works – not bad for someone coming late to literacy.  She and Teresa became very close, and it is said that Teresa died in her arms.   Because of her closeness to the foundress, Anne came to be regarded with huge reverence after Teresa died.  As prioress of Antwerp she wielded huge moral authority - and it was said that the city was saved from invaders on two occasions by her prayers.  Just one tiny part of Teresa’s monumental legacy.
