Autumn Rendezvous

As the leaves turn brown and yellow, and the trees create their beautiful autumnal displays, it is easy to feel a little melancholy.  I sometimes think of the songs of earlier times that sang of Autumn deceptions after Summer romances – Will I see you in September? was a line of which I remember the tune but not the identity of the singer.  I do remember the name and the face of the lady who sang Autumn Rendezvous about someone who didn’t turn up at the promised September reunion and caused great sadness (It was the recently deceased French singer Françoise Hardy).  Carmel however constantly reminds us that God’s faithfulness and His love for us endures 365 days in the year, in season and out of season.  Our songs about human love are all pointers to the divine love, of which they are a pale imitation, and the two loves coalesce as it were in that Old Testament book The Song of Songs, beloved of St John of the Cross and other Carmelite saints.
