St Bridget and Carmel

On today’s feast of St Bridget of Sweden I learn for the first time about the Brigittine Rosary, which apparently has special associations not just with the Brigittine nuns, but with the Carmelite Order (both OCarm and OCD), the La Sallian Brothers, and others.  The Brigittine Rosary was instituted and propagated by St. Bridget.  She was favoured with visions and ecstasies but remained profoundly humble with a deep devotion to the Passion of Our Lord and His Holy Wounds, and great love for the Blessed Virgin. The six-decade Rosary was at some point adopted as the Rosary of the Discalced Carmelite habit, with a large medal of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in addition to, or even in place of, the crucifix found on the Dominican Rosary.  I must confess it is the first I have heard of this rosary, but you can find out more about it if you google ‘Brigittine rosary’.  In the Joyful Mysteries the Immaculate Conception is added, in the Sorrowful Mysteris the placing of the body of Jesus in the arms of His Mother, in the Glorious Mysteries the Patronage of Mary, Mediatrix of All Grace (Brigittine Rosary) or the Patronage of Mary, Queen and Beauty of Carmel (Carmelite Rosary).

The cost of being a reformer

As I ponder the life of today’s saint, Charles Borromeo (1538-1584), it occurs to me that his vocation paralleled that of his older contemporary St Teresa (1515-1582).  Charles set about reforming his
