Teresa and a great artist

Perhaps the most famous image of our St Teresa is Bernini's sculpture representing her transverberation - the piercing of her heart by a seraph. Today for Discalced Carmelites is the Feast of the Transverberation. I am not a great enthusiast for sculpture but I was intrigued to discover that Bernini was one of the major artistic figures of the Baroque erea. He was commissioned to design a chapel for the Cornaro family and it is there in Rome that you can find the statue. This humble Spanish nun speaks to the world not only through her fantastically popular books but through a magnificent sculpture. And I do think that the sculpture gives a powerful representation of her message - a message that focusses on the all-consuming love affair between the believer and God.
