That mysterious vocation

I have just received the latest issue of the Carmelite Newsletter circulated from Australia, New Zealand, and Oceania. There is a lengthy obituary of a very talented figure among the OCD nuns, Sister Mary Katherine of the Eucharist. At an early age and before she entered Carmel she was clearly marked for leadership; she was chosen as one of three Australian delegates to the World Conference of the International Union of Students in Prague. According to the obituary, this event proved a great stimulus for her because she encountered many fellow students with a huge zeal for Communism. She found herself questioning whether her devotion to her faith could match theirs. Inspiration can come from the most unexpected places. Some time later she felt the call to Carmel and asked the Archbishop of her diocese for his blessing, but he told her she was making the biggest mistake of her life (perhaps he had singled her out as a future leader in the Archdiocese?). She was undeterred however and entered Carmel in 1954. Someone’s vocation to the Enclosed Life can be a mystery even to souls themselves active in Church leadership.
