Another Carmelite Prelate is celebrated by the Church today. After St Peter Thomas yesterday we have St Andrew Corsini (1302-1373/4). After a Frenchman, an Italian who was actually a contemporary of his and just three years older. Both men served as papal legates. Corsini was canonised in 1629, Peter Thomas a year earlier, and both were canonised by Pope Urban VIII. The story goes that when Pope Clement VI appointed him Bishop of Fiesole, St Andrew went into hiding. There is another delightful story that a child discovered him at the Charterhouse at Enna. Be that as it may, he later accepted the nomination as bishop as the result of a vision. He was well known for his austerities as bishop, for he wore a hair shirt and slept on a bed of vine-branches. At Fiesole, just northeast of Florence, he gained a reputation both as a peacemaker between rival political factions and for his care of the poor. Pope Urban V sent him to Bologna as a papal legate to heal a breach between the nobles and the people. Such is the treasury and variety of Carmelite saints.
