The Truth is a Person

An exciting new development for the Manchester area.  A small group of us met on zoom this week to discuss forming an OCDS group there, and we decided to go ahead.  The first meeting is planned for Wed 10 September, 6pm to 8pm, to take place at St Joseph’s Church in Irlam.  Some of those present tell me they have friends they think will be interested.  There are so many Catholics around who would like to delve deeper into the riches of their faith, to deepen their prayer lives and their closeness to God, but don’t really know how to go about it.  Those who feel drawn to silent prayer and meditation sometimes get drawn into Buddhism – I spoke to someone who had been down this road recently.  A few years ago I met a convert who was interested in Carmel and I asked him about his conversion.  He told me that he felt very blessed with a good marriage and children but in Buddhism there was no-one to thank!  This was what drew him to the Church.  I treasure this as a simple and unforgettable statement of a very profound truth about our faith.  In my youth, as a truth-seeker, I was fascinated by the statement of Jesus, ‘I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life’, and it dawned on me one day that this means that the Truth is a Person.  That is the stunning reality of our faith.
