Teresa's two ladies

We were looking at Chapter 10 in the Way of Perfection last night and I was struck with the delightful Teresa’s way of expressing things.  She says that humility and detachment are two inseparable sisters and that we must embrace them and take them around with us at all times.  We should ‘never be seen without them’.  It brought to my mind the delightful image of these two ladies accompanying me everywhere.  The wonderful thing is that according to Teresa their presence takes away fear.  Persons who are accompanied by these ladies ‘have no fear of anyone, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven’.  Indeed such persons wouldn’t even care if they lost everything and wouldn’t consider it a loss.  The only thing they are afraid of is displeasing God.  It makes me realise that we don’t need the Archangel Michael with his flaming sword at our side all the time so much as two very special ladies who will be our guardians.
